The mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park.
Gorilla permits are limited to only 8 people per day per family with the permit buying you 1 hour with the gorillas. However, in Uganda, they have introduced Gorilla Habituation Experience that allows you to spend upto 4hours with the Gorillas – allowing only 4 people to visit the Gorilla group in the company of Gorilla researcher.
Mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda which are all recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, under the management of Uganda Wildlife Authority, hosts more than 400 mountain Gorillas. Bwindi has four different sectors; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
Families found in each sector;-
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, sits on higher altitude between 2,227m and 4127m. It is home to the habituated Nyakagezi Gorilla family who are a nomadic group known to cross the border into Rwanda and the Congo.
The Gorilla Permits are cheaper in Uganda at USD 700- compared to Rwanda at USD1500- However, Gorilla Habituation in Uganda is USD 1500- allowing clients to spend upto 4hours with the Gorillas.
Gorilla trekking is done in Volcanoes National Park, a 3-hour drive from Kigali International Airport. There are 10 habituated groups that can be visited which include; Susa group, Karisimbi, Ugenda, Umubano, Sabinyo, Hirwa, Amahoro, Bwenge, Agasha and the Kwitonda
Kwita Izina, the baby gorilla naming ceremony is celebrated every year on the 1st week of September at Kinigi, Volcanoes National Park. This is a wonderful event which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Influential figures are invited to name the baby gorillas.
Gorilla permits in Rwanda go for USD 1500 for 1 hour, no special rate for residents and no habituation experience, if you visit more than 2 National Parks in Rwanda you get the Gorilla permit discounted to USD 1050- per permit.
